ADA/ABA Compliance Retrofitting

Client:
Government, Consultant
Location:
Waimea, Island of Hawaii, Hawaii

Our Approach

Blue Ocean provided civil support services for design of site, drainage, and accessibility improvements for the rehabilitation of an existing trail at the NPS Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site to comply with Architectural Barriers Act Accessible Standards (ABAAS).

Site improvements focused on equitable access and facilities for visitors with disabilities, avoiding excavation due to cultural resources, and reducing visual impacts of the new trail.

A turnaround area, relocation of interpretive trail exhibits, signage/marking and viewing/resting areas were added to keep all visitors on the paved path while providing a total cultural experience and respecting the significant of place.

Project Highlights

  • Topographic surveying and trail locations had to be carefully planned out and coordinated with the NPS cultural specialist to avoid disturbance of significant cultural or historical features found throughout the area.
